As students, you’re resume will likely appear fairly scant. It may seem like you’re summer jobs don’t look like much on a resume but listing the responsibilities you had will be important triggers to more ‘serious’ job aspirations.
Here are some skills to highlight:
1. Communication skills: Every job out there requires you to be able to communicate effectively. What employers are looking for however, is the proof. Have you given a presentation or report? Did you draft a press release or an important email to persuade a group of people of something? Think of any way you were effective verbally or written.
2. Technical skills: Did your part-time job require you to learn new software or programs? Which programs are you familiar with already?
3. Leadership and management skills: Management isn’t running a big department and calling the shots. Management skills can be experienced even in your part-time jobs. Did you work on your own in a project or organize an event? These responsibilities reveal an ability to take initiative and manage on a small scale.
4. Teamwork skills: If your summer job required you to work on a team, list your cooperative skills on your resume. Of course, include volunteer work as well.
5. Research and information gathering skills: Every company requires people who know how to collect and organize important information.
6. Creativity skills: A new approach to an old problem can highlight your ability to think creatively. Finding solutions to problems is fundamental to any organization.
